Rationale and motivation
Smart digital technologies, science, and research are playing an increasingly important role in today's world dominated by globalization processes and crises that impact regions, rural areas, and islands by global COVID pandemic and other global processes like migration, increased social disparities, polarization, radicalization.
The modern smart socio-technological digital smart systems have the potential and possibilities to improve the well-being and quality of people's living to increase the resilience and sustainability of regions, rural areas, and islands .
The COVID pandemic has a strong negative impact on the well-being of the local vulnerable populations of rural areas and islands, including economic, social, mental, and health impacts. It several serious systematic challenges for societies and their vitals system components, infrastructures that affect tourism, transport, educational, health, and social systems.
To develop new policies and technology, to apply efficiently smart digital technologies to overcome and to reduce the impact of COVID and other negative processes on regions and islands it requires the understanding at the system level the major interdependencies and undelaying processes.
The conference promotes a system complexity science and multidisciplinary research dialog that considers societal, cultural, and technological integration aspects of concrete regions and islands that could help to understand the whole complex dynamic situational picture and possibilities to react.
The COVID pandemic crisis requiring multidisciplinary cooperation with human and social science including the medical science to understand psychological, mental well-being and health, social and behavioral aspects
The insight into the cultural, psychological, and ethnic background of the local population of islands and villages provided by human science could help to integrate more efficiently new smart technologies, operation policies, and integrated digital platforms which require the trust and support of the local population and cooperation with local communities and public authorities .
The Islands due to their well defined geographical boundaries present the suitable place for research, testing, and validation of socio-technological solutions with the participation of the local population and business ecosystems as Living Lab which can be used to demonstrate, to test, and to validate new technologies digital platforms, policies, social innovations, and business solutions.
The science-society track includes sessions and interactive discussions focused on implantations topics on : systems, human and social, smart ICT and regional science, and a Living Labs to address these complex challenges and problems and to discuss multidisciplinary cooperation.
The track networking will contribute to establishing multidisciplinary Smart Islands and Regions multidisciplinary science-society cooperation network and Smart Island Lab and file benefit from Adriatic / Baltic sea cooperation format.
Objectives
Topics include but are not limited to:
The track presentations are grouped by five online thematic sessions each followed by a panle&cocreation session focussed on concrete implementations and follow up activities :
